INDOT announces FHWA awards

This funding will be used for the 2nd Phase of the Main Street Project in Madison

Madison, Indiana - The City of Madison has been awarded $8,857,451.80 in Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) funds to improve roads, bridges and pedestrian access.   These funds, the largest awarded to any community for this round of funding, will be used to complete the $10.3 million Phase II of the Main Street revisioning project.

“Strategic planning with our Main Street Steering Committee combined with our focus on improving public safety, growing tourism and attracting investment has now produced funding for two of the three phases of this initiative.  We are very grateful for INDOT’s commitment to improving the quality of life in Madison with our shared vision” said Mayor Bob Courtney.

The city also received $3,872,000 in federal funds in March of 2021 to complete Phase I of the project which is estimated to cost approximately $5 million.  The overall revisioning of Madison’s Main Street will be performed in three phases beginning on the west end and will address multiple aspects of each corridor.  Due to federal funding cycles, the improvements are expected to begin in 2025-2026.   The city has worked diligently over the past two years on traffic calming, long-term planning, and interim repairs to prepare for this major initiative.
