(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Calls regarding domestic violence and death are rising in Indiana, and it could be because of COVID-19.

The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence said that it’s seen an 86 percent increase in domestic violence-related deaths.

According to the group, increased social isolation, unemployment, and alcohol consumption caused by the pandemic are all factors that can lead to domestic violence.

The coalition said that it can be hard for those who are stuck at home to get away from an abuser, and it can also be hard to notice warning signs due to social distancing guidelines.

The group stated that making the first contact is a difficult, but important, first step towards safety for victims. If you need assistance you can contact the Indiana Coalition’s 24/7 hotline at 1-800-332-7385.

Locally, you can contact Safe Passage Inc. 24/7 at 1-877-733-1990.
