Short Pursuit

On Friday afternoon September 3, 2021, at approximately 3:30PM Madison Police Patrolman Jared Sweet attempted to execute a traffic stop on a white SAAB passenger car driven by Brandon E. Abbott 26, Madison, Indiana. Officer Sweet had prior knowledge that Abbott had active felony warrants out of the State of Kentucky, for narcotic violations. Officer Sweet attempted the traffic stop at Michigan Road and State Street, however Abbott failed to yield and led officers on a pursuit.
The pursuit encompassed an area between Highland Drive and State Street. At one point, Abbott stopped his vehicle on Maple Hill Drive, to let a passenger out of his car. The pursuit continued until Abbott's vehicle became disabled, after striking a culvert in the 200 block of Mouser Street. Abbott was taken into custody and subsequently transported to KDH-ER, as it was believed he ingested narcotics.
During the following search of Abbotts vehicle, officers located a controlled substance. Abbott is currently incarcerated at the Jefferson County Jail on preliminary alleged charges of; reckless driving class "C" misdemeanor, possession of a controlled substance class"B" misdemeanor, obstruction of justice L-6 felony and resisting law enforcement L-6 felony. Abbott will eventually face extradition back to Kentucky regarding his felony narcotic warrants.
Brandon Abbott has the presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty. Patrolman Sweet was assisted by other MPD officers, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and the Hanover Police Department. One MPD police unit sustained very minor damage during the pursuit, there were no injuries.
