Madison's Mayor Gives Update About Downtown Devestation

61 Homes Affected,Bridge Compromised, State And Federal Officials Contacted

On Monday Afternoon Madison Mayor Bob Courtney held a press conference to give an update to citizens about the devestation left over from this past weekends flooding. He stated that 35 residents were rescued during the initial rescue operation and no injuries. City Hall has been staffed since Saturday morning for residents to get in contact with officials. The Utilities Department has been out accessing homes to make sure of no leaks of the utilities. Street Department was in the areas affected checking drains and cleaning streets along with Madison City Fire Departments.Madison Police have been on patrol in the area 24 hrs a day since early Saturday morning to make sure homes are safe. The areas severely affected are North Walnut Street,North Jefferson Street,Milton Street. The Bridge on Milton Street is closed for an undetermined amount of time as inspectors have to come and inspect it has it potentially compromised by the floodwaters.The Mayor's Office has been in contact with Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb's office along with Congressional and State Representatives to help with the relief efforts.On Wednesday Mayor Courtney is meeting with officials from Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to get some idea of what relief government will be able to help with.The Madison Transfer Station is still taking refuge from the flood areas each day until further notice. Most of the properties that were affected by the flooding were in the Crooked Creek Area. If anyone needs assistance from the City please call the Mayor's Office at 812-265-8300.
