Mykal James Alan Gerou, 24, of Newberry, Michigan was found guilty on all counts by a jury on August 20, 2025. Gerou was convicted of four (4) counts of Intimidation as level 5 felonies, and one (1) count of Intimidation as a level six felony. Superior Court Judge Blaine Goode subsequently sentenced Gerou on September 16, 2025, to 12 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, with one (1) of those years suspended to probation. The case was tried by Chief Deputy Prosecutor Mark Wynn and Deputy Prosecutor Michaelia Gilbert.

“Gerou has a similar history of egregious behavior in Michigan. His criminal actions continued when he came to Jefferson County.  We appreciate the careful consideration of the evidence given by the jury during the trial.”

Deputy Logan Gray, with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, began an investigation in June of 2024 into numerous threats of violence made by Mykal Gerou to community agencies and individuals including the Jefferson County Department of Child Services (DCS), a therapist, his CHINS attorney, and a local animal control officer. The investigation revealed that on multiple occasions, Gerou made threats to different individuals regarding killing DCS workers and others by use of lethal force. Gerou was arrested for multiple acts of intimidation on June 28, 2024, at the DCS office in Madison. A semi-automatic Ruger pistol was located in his vehicle along with two loaded magazines.

On September 16, 2025, Deputy Prosecutor Michaelia Gilbert presented arguments in support of a sentence that reflected the severity of the defendant’s conduct. In issuing the sentence, Judge Blaine Goode emphasized that no public official should have to live in fear for their life as a result of carrying out their duties.

The Prosecutor’s Office thanked the individuals and agencies whose dedication made this outcome possible, including: the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Hanover Police Department, City of Madison Animal Control, Jefferson County Animal Control, the Indiana Department of Child Services, and Nortons King’s Daughters’ Hospital.
