Teachers are needed to help develop educational materials for a unique historic industrial site in Madison, Indiana, during the fall of 2025.  Selected applicants will earn a $2,000 stipend to create student curriculum and activities to expand the museum experience for the Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum.  The application deadline is August 22 and is available at: https://bit.ly/HMIapply.

Team members are required to attend a kick-off event September 4 and a work session October 2, with a final review session at a date yet to be determined.  All events will be on-site in Madison, Indiana from 4 to 7 pm.  Dinner will be provided.

The project is entitled “Westward Dreams, Factory Realities:  A Story of Transformation.” It is intended to prepare upper elementary grade students for an in-person field trip to the museum or as a stand-alone learning unit.  Teachers will design technology-rich experiential learning lessons for global Google Classroom sharing while meeting both the Indiana and Common Core curriculum standards.

The Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum is the only remaining saddletree factory in the United States, dating to the 19th century.  It is filled with a wealth of historic American-made woodworking machinery, tools, and saddletrees, or the internal wooden frames for saddles.  The Schroeder family made and sold over 500,000 saddletrees to saddle makers throughout the Western Hemisphere from 1878 to 1972.  The factory was one of twelve in Madison, which was the center for saddletree manufacture in the country in the late 1800s.

The museum is a property of Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI), a not-for-profit historic preservation organization, which has played a key role in the preservation, restoration, education, and development of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District. HMI owns and operates 10 historic properties with the help of countless volunteers.  For more information, contact Historic Madison, Inc. at programs@historicmadisoninc.com or call (812) 265-2967.
