August 20, 2021, at approximately 10:30PM Madison Police responded to Wal-Mart reference theft in progress.  As officers approached the business, the suspect vehicle (Dodge Durango) was observed leaving the area and traveling westbound on Demaree Drive.  Officer Curtis Shelpman attempted to initiate the stop, however the vehicle failed to yield.

Officer Josh Nolan turned onto Demaree Drive, from Michigan road, when the fleeing vehicle drove at him and forced the officer from the roadway.  The fleeing vehicle drove into the grass, turned around, and attempted to strike Officer Nolan's vehicle a second time.  Nolan was able to avoid being struck by quickly reversing his vehicle.

The pursuit continued into Dover Apartments and eventually into the Presidential Estates Complex.  The fleeing vehicle drove through yards in the complex, before striking a tree.  The driver, later identified as Joshua T. Lake 36, Sunman, Indiana, fled from officers on foot.  Lake was eventually taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Joshua Lake continued to resist officers after being taken into custody, as he spit blood into the face of MPD officers.  Lake was transported from the scene to KDH-ER for his injuries sustained when he struck the tree. Lake was later transported to Louisville for additional medical treatment.

The female passenger in the vehicle, Kaytlynn Callis 25, Madison, Indiana, was detained for theft.  Callis remained in the vehicle and did not offer any resistance toward officers.  Lake will face numerous charges, which include battery on a police officer, resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness, battery by bodily waste, and possession of methamphetamine. Additional charges are likely.  MPD officers sustained minor injuries,

Both Kaytlynn Callis and Joshua Lake have the presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty. Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Kenny Jasper assisted MPD. The investigation is ongoing.
