Zimmerman's bill expanding the use of fire protection districts moves to Senate

Would allow districts to provide EMT's

STATEHOUSE (March 3, 2025) – State Rep. Alex Zimmerman's (R-North Vernon) bill allowing fire protection districts to provide emergency medical services passed out of the House.

Zimmerman said fire protection districts, which can be formed by local governments, have been formed to provide fire protection and prevention measures in their communities. Some fire protection districts desire to provide EMS services to fill a dire need for services, but cannot do so under current law.

Zimmerman said this bill allows fire protection districts to provide EMS services, in addition to fire protection and prevention services, should the district choose to do so.

"Fire protection districts are vital to Indiana's safety, and this bill allows them to expand services to help more Hoosiers," Zimmerman said. "Having emergency medical services included can fill in local emergency coverage, keeping our communities safer."

House Bill 1113 now moves to the Senate for further consideration. To learn more about the bill and watch session, visit iga.in.gov.
