MADISON, Ind. – The Healthy Communities Initiative of Jefferson County and Jefferson County Tobacco Coalition will host a Cigarette Litter Clean Up event in recognition of World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, May 31. The event will take place at Lide White Boys and Girls Club at 1 p.m.

Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item in the world, creating an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of waste each year. This type of litter causes harm to the environment and is not biodegradable. Cigarette butts take up to ten years to completely decompose.

Collection bags, gloves, hand sanitizer and popsicles will be provided for all participants.

If you are unable to attend the clean up event at the Boys and Girls Club, use this worldwide recognized day to organize your own cigarette litter clean up at your place of employment, in your neighborhood, or at a nearby park or playground.

For more information, please call 812-801-0598, email garrettn@kdhmadison.org, or visit the Healthy Communities Initiative of Jefferson County Facebook page.
