(Madison, Ind.) - The City of Madison announced the resignation today of Matt Wirth, the Director of Economic Development.  Wirth, who has helped lead economic development efforts for the city since January 2020, resigned his role to pursue an opportunity in the private sector as the Southeast Indiana Business Development Specialist for Commonwealth Engineers, Inc.

“I would like to thank Mayor Bob Courtney for providing me with the opportunity to work directly with him and his administration. My experience with the city has been invaluable, and I have enjoyed working with the team at City Hall and the citizens of Madison,” said Wirth.

During his time with the city, Wirth has worked closely with the Madison Redevelopment Commission (RDC) to actively pursue a downtown grocery store and to bring retail and housing opportunities to the former Madison Plaza property on the hilltop.

In addition to working with the RDC, Wirth has been instrumental in helping local small businesses navigate the economic hardship brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through his efforts, the city has secured over $500,000 in COVID relief funds from the state of Indiana and has directly assisted 32 small businesses to date.

“Matt has been a great asset to the city as we have worked to restructure economic development in Madison, improve our analytics, and establish priorities, all while navigating the economic hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has truly cared about his work and the future of Madison, and for that, I am grateful. I wish him continued success in his future endeavors,” said Mayor Bob Courtney.

Prior to his time at City Hall, Wirth served as the Director of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Corporation, where he served for four years and worked closely with the city administration.  His last official day with the city is May 21st.
