Work represents the next phase of a larger, multi-year effort to improve the safety
Madison, Indiana (July 31, 2025) –The City of Madison is excited to share that the Re-Envisioning Main Street project will begin next week. This work represents the next phase of a larger, multi-year effort to improve the safety, accessibility, and overall experience of Madison’s historic Main Street corridor.
Project Area:
The current phase includes improvements along Main Street from Broadway to Mill Street, including milling and paving of the roadway, sidewalk improvements and replacements in some areas to meet ADA accessibility standards, storm drain repairs, and the installation of pedestrian safety bump-outs at Vine, Elm, and Broadway Streets (view the rendering at madison-in.gov/mainstreet). At each intersection, low-maintenance landscaping will also be added. In addition, trees that are either significantly impacted by construction or currently causing damage to sidewalks and streets will be removed. Where feasible, replacement trees will be planted to preserve and enhance the City’s urban canopy.
Construction Schedule:
Work is scheduled to begin Monday, August 4, 2025, starting at Vine Street. The project will move intersection by intersection, in the following order: Vine Street, then Elm Street, followed by Broadway Street.
• Each intersection will take approximately two weeks to complete. During this time:
• About 30 feet of the intersecting street (north and south of Main) will be closed
• For each two-week period, one block of Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for 1–2 days
• Temporary sidewalk disruptions and detours may occur
• Access will remain open to homeowners and business owners throughout construction.
Please Note: There will be no street or sidewalk closures during Ribberfest BBQ & Blues, Chautauqua Festival of Art, and the Unbroken Circle Music Festival. All routes will remain open for these events.
The City will provide periodic updates. More information can be found at madison-in.gov/mainstreet.
