The Jefferson County Health Department is notifying residents that confirmed cases of Cyclospora infection (cyclosporiasis) have been identified among county residents. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis. Fresh produce, including certain fruits and vegetables, has been associated with Cyclospora outbreaks in the past. Cyclospora is not typically spread directly from person to person.
Symptoms usually begin about one week after exposure and may include:
• Frequent, watery diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Stomach cramps or bloating
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Low-grade fever
Without treatment, symptoms can last several weeks or longer and may come and go over time. The Jefferson County Health Department encourages anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea or other symptoms consistent with cyclosporiasis to contact their healthcare provider. Diagnosis requires specific laboratory testing, and the infection is treatable with prescription antibiotics.
Residents can help reduce their risk of foodborne illness by:
• Washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating,
cutting, or cooking them.
• Washing hands with soap and water before preparing or eating food and after using the
restroom.
• Cooking as much fresh produce as possible before consuming.
At this time, no specific food item has been identified as the source of these cases. The investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be shared if it becomes available.
