Gov. Beshear Signs Bill Allowing Students To Repeat Their Current Grade

Beshear signed five education related bills on Wednesday.

(Frankfort, Ky.) – A new bill signed by Governor Andy Beshear will allow Kentucky students to repeat their current grade level.

Senate Bill 128 allows public school students in grades K-12 currently enrolled in Kentucky to request to use the 2021-22 school year as a supplemental school year to retake and supplement coursework already completed.

“The past year has been uniquely challenging, and while educators have done their best in these trying circumstances, the pandemic has deprived some students of priceless opportunities and memories,” said Gov. Beshear. “School districts who choose this Supplemental School Year option for their students also will have access to federal funds to remedy learning loss in creative ways and to help all students get back on track academically.”

The bill also allows high school senior athletes to obtain a fifth year of eligibility as long as they do not turn 19 years old by August 1.

Local boards of education will have the power to either approve or deny all requests.

In addition to signing SB 128 into law, Governor Andy Beshear signed four other education bills into law and vetoed two others.
