Historic Madison, Inc. President John Staicer announced that the City of Madison is the 2024 Dorothy Inglis Reindollar Historic Preservation Award recipient. The City was honored for its outstanding rehabilitation of the Crystal Beach Pool & Bathhouse. The award ceremony took place Friday evening at the HMI annual Preservation Gala at Shrewsbury-Windle House. The award is given in memory of Dotti Inglis Reindollar, who was a long-time HMI board member, city councilperson, and fervent promoter of Madison.
In his remarks, Staicer noted, “This year’s Gala celebrates the 65th anniversary of HMI. Madison is an amazing historic community because of the commitment of generations of community leaders who have invested in the preservation and improvement of our amazing city. Historic preservation is one of the major economic drivers in our community. Several years ago, Mayor Bob Courtney and other leaders envisioned a daring reconstruction of the Crystal Beach Pool complex as an investment in Madison’s present and future. It is the perfect example of carefully managing change by maintaining the pool’s original iconic half-round shape and incorporating the modern amenities that the community wanted. The reimagined Crystal Beach Aquatics Center saved and tastefully rehabilitated the historic bathhouse and its upstairs meeting space as well. This project, with its focus on broad community support and preservation blended with tasteful incorporation of modern amenities, is very much in the spirit of Dotti Reindollar.”
In receiving the award on behalf of the City, Mayor Bob Courtney stated: "We are incredibly honored to receive the 2024 Dorothy' Dotti' Inglis Reindollar Preservation Award for the Crystal Beach Aquatic Park restoration. This recognition celebrates our community's dedication to preserving Madison's rich history while enhancing spaces that serve both our residents and visitors. Crystal Beach has been a cherished landmark for generations, and its revitalization reflects our commitment to honoring the past as we build a vibrant future. I want to thank Historic Madison, Inc. for this recognition and everyone who made this project possible through vision, hard work, and heart," said Madison's Mayor Bob Courtney.
Over 130 people attended Historic Madison’s largest fundraising event at the Shrewsbury-Windle House National Historic Landmark, which is celebrated as one of America’s most important 19th-century homes. “Madison is the most diverse assembly of high-quality Grecian [architecture] to be found anywhere in America,” wrote Roger Kennedy in his book Greek Revival in America. The Shrewsbury-Windle House is the “best of the best” of our nation’s Greek Revival style buildings, according to Marsh Davis, President Emeritus of Indiana Landmarks, one of the most prestigious historic preservation organizations in the U.S.
HMI is pleased to acknowledge the following corporate-level sponsors of the Preservation Gala: Morgan Foods, Repp & Mundt Construction, German American Bank, Church Mutual Insurance, Historic Eagle Cotton Mill Fairfield Inn & Suites, Goelzer Investment Management, Ratio Design, Super ATV, Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning & Arsee Engineering.
