Indiana High Schools Must Offer Computer Science Class By 2021

Governor Eric Holcomb signed the bill Thursday.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - A bill that will require Indiana schools to offer a computer science class has been signed into law.

Governor Eric Holcomb signed Senate Bill 172 on Thursday. Bill author and state senator Jeff Raatz (R-Centerville) and Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg), a co-author of the bill, were among those in attendance for the signing ceremony.

“I look at this as a preparation for workforce development across the State of Indiana,” Raatz remarked at the bill signing.

The new law requires K through 12 schools to embed computer science training in their education by the 2021-2022 school year. Every high school will have to offer an elective computer science class at least once per year by then, too.

Only about half of Indiana’s high schools currently offer a computer science course.
