Indiana Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 13th through March 19th, 2022

Statewide tornado drill between 10:00 am and 1030 am EDT on Tuesday March 15th, 2022

Indianapolis, IN - March 2nd, 2022 - Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has proclaimed March 13th through March 19th, 2022 as Indiana Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), Indiana Emergency Management Agencies (EMA), and the Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA) will use this week to remind all Hoosier citizens about the importance of understanding severe weather risks and knowing how to effectively prepare for them. It is important for Indiana residents to know what safety measures should be taken when severe weather threatens while at home, at work, or out in public spaces. Severe weather knows no boundaries and can develop quickly, and sometimes unexpectedly. Severe weather preparedness week is an important time to meet with family members at home or safety teams at work to review preparedness plans and safety procedures so they can be implemented quickly and efficiently when severe weather is imminent. Now is the time to learn how to receive life saving warning information, not when warnings have already been issued.

To help with preparedness and practicing of safety action plans, the NWS will conduct a statewide tornado drill between 10:00 am and 1030 am EDT (9:00 am and 9:30 am CDT) on Tuesday March 15th, 2022. In the event of actual severe weather, the test will be postponed and conducted on Wednesday March 16th at the same time. A TEST tornado warning alert will be issued by the NWS and disseminated across most notification systems, including the statewide Emergency Alert System (EAS). Whether people are at home, work, school or in a public space, everyone is encouraged to use this drill to safely enact severe weather action plans and practice evacuations to safe areas.

Sam Lashley, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the NWS Indianapolis office wants everyone across Indiana to be prepared for severe weather. “The last two years have seen fewer tornadoes and severe thunderstorms than normal. It has been 10 years since a violent tornado has occurred anywhere in the state, and that was an EF4 tornado that devastated Henryville, IN on March 2nd, 2012. We do not want residents to let down their guard, but remain proactive and engaged with preparedness, helping the NWS build a weather ready nation”.
