(Jefferson County, Ind.) – The Jefferson County Health Department released a list of guidelines to be followed by employees and customers while attending facilities such as salons, barbers, spas, tattoo parlors, and massage therapists.

Personal guidelines are as follows:

For Employers:

  • Ensure 6 feet between employers utilizing spaced stations. If not possible, install a barrier between the stations

  • Develop a protocol to screen employees upon entry
  • Require symptomatic employees to stay home and recommend they get tested
  • REQUIRE a face covering for employees
  •  Wear gloves whenever possible
  • Clean high touch items after each use
  • Expand hours to limit customers at the facility at one time

For Customers:

  • Maintain social distancing
  • Wash hands in high-contact areas (register, entry, bathrooms)
  • Do not attend an appointment if you are ill, symptomatic, or positive for COVID-19
  • No guest should accompany the customer (unless the customer is a minor)
  • REQUIRE face coverings for customers (non-surgical mask, scarfs) and have unused face coverings available
  • Consider at-risk populations to have specific hours within the business
  • Increase delivery, curbside pick-up, to-go orders for all products (hairspray, shampoo, nail polish)

Products and Spaces:

  • Remove all unnecessary items from common areas (magazine, newspapers, service menus)
  • Wipe down all seats and tables
  • A disinfectant should be used on the reception desk
  • Employees should wash their hands after using the phone, computers, cash registers, or credit card machines. Wipe these particular areas between each use.
  • The use of a credit/debit payment is preferred
  • Clean and disinfect all retail areas daily, including products
  • Clients should not be touching a product unless they intend to purchase such product
  • Provide signage within the facility making customers aware of the steps that are being followed in order to provide proper sanitation

The following should be sanitized after each use:

  • Shampoo bowls
  • Stations
  • Treatment rooms
  • Waiting areas
  • Restrooms
  • Break rooms
  • Counters
  • Tools
  • Doors and doorknobs
  • Light switches

Product samples should not be offered, and clearly posted social distancing signage to advise employees and customers of requirements that are being followed.

It is recommended by the health department to do the following:

  • Deep clean the facility on a regular schedule
  • Use plastic coverings on cloth chairs that cannot be properly cleaned and disinfected
  • Consider discontinuing the use of paper appointment books or cards, instead replace with electronic options
  • If possible, wrap shampoo bowls in plastic and discard in between clients.
