Jefferson Co. Health Officials Discuss Counties COVID-19 Fight As The State Begins to Reopen

(Jefferson County, Ind.) – During today’s briefing on COVID-19, health and government officials spoke on the reopening of the state, as well as the reopening of local businesses.

Currently, the state of Indiana is in the second stage of Governor Holcomb’s back on track plan, while this plan is allowing businesses to open, and groups to gather in 25 people or less the Jefferson County Health Officials are advising residents social distancing should still be practiced at this time.

“With churches opening this weekend, social distancing should be practiced, and those who are 65 or older, or have a compromised immune system should stay home,” said Tammy Monroe, Director of the Jefferson County Health Department.

While the county will resume coronavirus testing, beginning on Monday, May 25 the Indiana State Department of Health will be taking over the contact tracing for the positive cases.

The sate will be doing this tracing through email, phone, or postal service.

During the briefing, Monroe also stated that beginning on Monday, May 11 the health department will resume all services, such as HIV/STD testing, and immunizations.

Currently, the county has 33 positive cases of coronavirus, of those 73 percent are male and 27 percent are female.

Blythe Couch, the emergency preparedness nurse, stated there have not been any deaths in the county related to the coronavirus, but there are some with the virus who are on ventilators at the time.

According to Shane Williams, director of EMS and emergency preparedness for KDH, 1,038 people have been tested through the KDH COVID-19 Clinic, and most of them are recovering within two weeks.

The COVID clinic is still taking patients Monday through Friday, and if you feel you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, you can call 812-801-8010 and make an appointment.

Sheriff Dave Thomas also gave an update on the two officers who tested positive with COVID.

“At this time the two officers are ready to come out of quarantine, and come back to work,” stated Thomas.
