Jefferson County Moves to Travel Advisory (Yellow) Status as Extreme Cold Approaches

Drivers should still use extreme caution as some areas are still slick

Jefferson County, IN — January 27, 2026 — The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency has downgraded local travel conditions to Travel Advisory (Yellow Status). While roads have improved, drivers should continue to use caution and remain alert for slick spots, drifting in rural areas, and rapidly changing conditions.

With travel conditions stabilizing, the primary threat is now shifting to extreme cold expected to impact the region over the next several days. According to the National Weather Service, dangerously low wind chills may create life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed for prolonged periods. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors and take extra precautions to protect vulnerable individuals, pets, and livestock.

Warming Shelters Available

To support community safety during the cold-weather emergency, the following warming centers are open:

· The Salvation Army — OPEN 24 HOURS Provides overnight warming, daytime shelter, and support for basic needs.

· The Boys and Girls Club — OPEN DURING DAYTIME HOURS Offering a warm, safe environment throughout daytime operations.

· Secondary Warming Shelters Will be activated if needed based on demand and weather conditions.

Community Safety Reminders

· Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those without adequate heat.

· Bring pets indoors and ensure outdoor animals have proper shelter, unfrozen water, and bedding.

· Use safe heating practices — avoid using ovens, grills, or unvented heaters inside homes.

· Stay informed through official Jefferson County EMA channels and National Weather Service updates.
