This sentence stems from the May 2022 shooting that took place
Jefferson County, Indiana (October 4, 2023) – A man convicted of the murder of his girlfriend was sentenced to 81 years this afternoon in Jefferson Circuit Court.
Dalton M. Simmonds, 29, Kent, Indiana, was sentenced to 81 years. The sentence was handed down by Judge D.J. Mote.
Simmonds was convicted in August on charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, obstruction of justice and animal cruelty, as well as being a habitual felony offender.
“This is an appropriate sentence for this heinous crime that took the life of Christy “Cricket” Newman,” said Prosecutor David Sutter. “This case involving domestic violence ended in the most tragic way. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This case is a sobering reminder of the devastating impact domestic violence can have.”
Simmonds shot Newman on May 14, 2022, following an argument.
The incident began with Simmonds setting curtains in the residence on fire. Newman went to a neighbor’s house for help.
After Simmonds left, Newman returned to the home to retrieve some personal items before she left. However, Simmonds returned.
An argument between the two resulted in Simmonds shooting Newman, who died shortly thereafter.
“Many law enforcement officers and other personnel, multiple citizens and the jury all deserve credit for their roles in bringing this case to its conclusion,” said Sutter. “This was a difficult process for all involved, but justice was served for Ms. Newman.”
