Kentucky Education Leaders to Converge on Capitol February 8

legislators to hear directly from their local school leaders

(Frankfort, Ky) School leaders from across the state will converge at the State Capitol on Wednesday, February 8, for KASA’s Annual Legislative Drive-In Day. The primary goal of this day is for legislators to hear directly from their local school leaders on important education issues such as teacher shortage and other state and local education issues. “Drive-In Day is a critical event as it helps our school leaders build relationships with their legislators and make them aware of the critical issues facing public education,” said KASA Executive Director Dr. Rhonda Caldwell. During Drive-In, KASA will present a special award to Senator Stephen West. In July KASA named three legislators as recipients of its Telescopic Vision Award honoring their work on SB 9, The Read to Succeed Act. Senator Steve West was unable to be in attendance when Representatives Tina Bojanowski and James Allen Tipton received their awards during KASA’s Annual Leadership Institute meeting in July. The award presentation to Senator West will take place on February 8 at 12:55 p.m. EST in the Capitol Annex Room 228 when school administrators from West’s 27th Senatorial District will be in Frankfort for the KASA Annual Legislative Drive-In Day. Senator West, Representative Tipton and Representative Bojanowski were instrumental in the passage of the 2022 Read to Succeed Act which bears the most scientifically proven pedagogy on reading for students in grades 1-3. This is the period when it is critical for students to acquire reading skills to help ensure future success in life. Reading experts have described The Read to Succeed Act as a potential game changer in Kentucky’s effort to turn around lagging reading scores and empower our children with this most important life skill. KASA is the largest school administrator group in Kentucky representing more than 3,300 education leaders from across the commonwealth. Formed in 1969, KASA connects education leaders to policymakers, legislators, and other interest groups, and provides numerous benefits to Kentucky’s school administrators.
