(Indianapolis, Ind.) - State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) at the Statehouse recently honored North Vernon student Raul Antonio Ruiz with a House resolution for being named an Indianapolis NBA Rising Star All-Star.

Lucas, a co-author of House Resolution 12, said "Rising Stars" are high school seniors who demonstrate leadership in their schools and communities, and they receive a $2,100 scholarship. Ruiz was 1 of 21 Indiana students selected for the scholarship.

At Jennings County High School, Ruiz is an active member of the Hope Squad, which is a school-based peer support program that empowers students to take actions to prevent suicide by partnering with local mental health agencies. Ruiz is also an active member of the basketball, football and track teams, and he frequently volunteers at a local North Vernon homeless shelter and food pantry.

"Raul demonstrates a willingness to engage and give back to his community through service," Lucas said. "He is a good role model, and I look forward to him continuing to make a difference in the lives of others."
