Madison, Indiana (January 9, 2025) –On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mayor Bob Courtney was honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, one of Indiana's highest and most distinguished recognitions, in a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse. Presented by Governor Eric J. Holcomb, this personal tribute acknowledges Mayor Courtney's extraordinary leadership, commitment to public service, and significant contributions to the City of Madison and the State of Indiana.

The Sagamore of the Wabash is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to the state or the Governor. Past recipients have included astronauts, presidents, artists, and citizens who have significantly contributed to Indiana's heritage and progress. Mayor Courtney's recognition places him among this distinguished group of leaders.

"The Madison story has been a proud one, enhanced by Mayor Courtney's proud and positive stewardship. I am grateful for all he's meant to Indiana at large and equally for his counsel and friendship," said Governor Holcomb.

Since taking office, Mayor Courtney has focused on historic preservation, public safety, economic opportunity, and quality-of-life initiatives, with a strong emphasis on public-private partnerships. His achievements include serving on the state legislative committee for Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (AIM), being appointed by Governor Holcomb to the Indiana Public Health Commission, and playing a key role in securing one of Indiana's most significant economic development grants as part of the Southern Indiana Regional Development Authority.

Mayor Courtney is also a former president of the Indiana Conference of Mayors and a fellow of the Hunt Institute for Early Learning Leadership. His efforts to enhance Madison's infrastructure, cultural vibrancy, and economic development have solidified his legacy as a transformative leader.

"I am deeply humbled to receive the Sagamore of the Wabash Award," said Mayor Courtney. "This recognition is not just for me but for the entire community of Madison. It reflects the hard work and collaborative spirit of our residents, city staff, and community partners who share a vision for a brighter future. I am profoundly grateful to Governor Holcomb and all who have supported our efforts."

The ceremony took place in the Governor's Office, where Mayor Courtney was joined by his wife, Tammy, for this momentous occasion.
