Historic Madison, Inc., in partnership with Discover Indiana, is pleased to announce the release of a new online tour of Madison. “Madison: The Heart of the American Story,” focuses on 10 places in the National Historic Landmark district which tell how American history flows through Madison from pioneer times to the present. The tour is free of charge at https://publichistory.iupui.edu/tours/show/48. From its founding, Madison witnessed and contributed to the ebb and flow of our nation’s growth. The city’s acclaimed historic structures reveal fascinating stories about American industry, commerce and transportation, faith and healthcare, and architecture and urban development all within a walkable 133 block area. “Madison is the perfect location to learn about and enjoy the history of our nation through this new digital tour,” stated John Staicer, President & Executive Director of Historic Madison, Inc. “Over 200 years of the nation’s history reverberates through our incredible commercial district, our houses of worship and even in our former factory complexes. These places tell stories of the struggle for freedom, our right to worship, how we earn our livings and our ability to move around the country,” he continued. “Digital tours are a great way to engage with citizens and highlight the themes of American history at places with compelling stories” said Dr. Jennifer Guiliano, a history professor at Indiana University who contributed to the Discover Indiana project. “We hope the online content spurs individuals to visit these sites and learn about the people who lived here before us.” Discover Indiana is a project of the Public History Program at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, the Indiana Historical Society and local partners such as Historic Madison, Inc. Discover Indiana includes thirty-nine other tours across the state showcasing our remarkable and unique local history. The Discover Indiana virtual tours are the first of a series of new online programs that Historic Madison, Inc. plans to make available in the coming months. Historic Madison, Inc., a not for profit historic preservation organization founded in 1960, has played a key role in the preservation, restoration, education and development of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District. The organization owns and operates 11 historic properties, five of which are museums. If you enjoy history, industrial heritage, gardening or folk crafts we have a place for you! Volunteer docent and group tour guides positions are available.
