Madison Mayor Bob Courtney swore in Brandon Ehlers as the City of Madison’s full-time Fire Chief.

This marks a significant investment in public safety and the continued growth of Madison’s Fire Department. Ehlers, who most recently served as Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Madison, brings extensive experience in emergency response, training, and inter-agency coordination to the role. He has also served the City of Madison as a volunteer firefighter for more than a decade, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to protecting the community.

In conjunction with Ehlers’ appointment, Bill DeVries, who has served as Interim Fire Chief, will transition into the role of Executive Assistant Chief, continuing his longstanding service and leadership within the department.

“As Fire Chief, I am committed to leading with a focus on safety, efficiency, and collaboration,” said Ehlers. “I look forward to building on the department’s strengths, fostering strong relationships across agencies, and continuing to enhance the level of service we provide to the community. It is an honor to serve the City of Madison in this capacity.”

Ehlers’ background includes leadership in emergency response training, serving as a liaison between municipal agencies, and helping develop the next generation of firefighters through hands-on and state certified training programs. His certifications include Firefighter I/II, Fire and Emergency Service Instructor, Emergency Medical Responder, Hazmat Operations, Technical Rescue, Rope Rescue, Water Rescue, Confined Space, and Trench Rescue.

Mayor Courtney emphasized the importance of the appointment, noting the City’s ongoing commitment to strengthening essential services and investing in the future of public safety.

“This is a step forward for our community,” said Mayor Courtney. “Fire protection demands greater investment. Brandon has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and a deep commitment to protecting our residents. We are confident he will continue to move the department forward while building on the strong foundation already in place. We are also grateful to Bill DeVries for his steady leadership as Interim Chief and are pleased he will continue serving in this new role.”

The City of Madison looks forward to this next chapter of leadership within the Fire Department and the continued dedication of the men and women who serve and protect the community.
