Numerous Arrested After Standoff in Madison

Standoff nearly six hours

Friday, February 8, 2019, the Indiana State Police went to an address in Madison, Indiana to conduct a theft investigation.  While at the residence, a Madison, Indiana man fled into an apartment and remained in a standoff with police for nearly six hours.  Numerous individuals who were in the apartment ultimately surrendered peacefully to troopers and were arrested on various charges.

The investigation by Trooper Andrew Garrett began when he took a report of a theft from Deputy, Indiana on February 7, 2019.  The theft investigation led him and other officers to 130 Taft Drive in Madison, Indiana yesterday.  At approximately 6:00 pm, officers approached four people of interest outside the residence.  One of the males, identified as Joshua M. Moreno, age 39, Madison, Indiana fled from officers and entered an apartment at that address.  The Indiana State Police soon learned that at least four people were being held in the apartment against their will by Moreno.  Troopers also learned that numerous other individuals were in the apartment.

The Indiana State Police SWAT Team and hostage negotiators responded to the scene.  A search warrant was obtained for the apartment. 

At approximately 10:00 pm, four individuals were released from the apartment.  At approximately 12:00 am, all of the remaining individuals exited the apartment and surrendered to law enforcement at the scene. Eight individuals were arrested on various charges.  They were all transported to the Jefferson County Jail where they will be held pending their initial appearances in court.
