Seymour Man In Stable Condition Following Stabbing

This incident occurred on January 21, 2021.

(Seymour, Ind.) – On January 21, at approximately 10:26 p.m. the Seymour Police Department Communications received a call advising that an individual had been stabbed in the 900 block on North O’Brien Street.

Officers responded to the location and found a 30-year-old male victim that had suffered a stab wound to the stomach. Officers had determined that the victim had been stabbed with a spear.

The victim was immediately taken to Schenck Medical Center for Treatment where he was then transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.

Investigators who were called to the scene obtained a search warrant for a residence located at 923 North O’Brien Street.

While searching the residence, investigators and patrol officers located drugs, drug paraphernalia, and the spear that was allegedly used in the incident. Further investigation led to the arrests of 21-year-old Matthew C. Smith.

Smith is currently in the Jackson County Jail. The Seymour Police Department announced that currently, the victim is in stable condition.

Smith was arrested on the alleged charges of:

  • Attempted Murder (level 1 felony)
  • Possession of Heroin/Fentanyl
  • Violation of the legend drug (level 6 felony)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (class A misdemeanor)
  • Possession of paraphernalia (class A misdemeanor)
