Join us this summer for a tour of St. Michael the Archangel! Inspired by heaven and hewn from the earth, St. Michael the Archangel’s unique design embodies the dreams of immigrants for a better life now and in the world to come. It was built as a Catholic Church, with the first mass being held on December 22, 1839. The building remained a church until the parishes of Madison were consolidated in 1993. Historic Madison, Inc. has cared for the site for over 30 years. Although the space is no longer a church, many artifacts connected to the church are still present. The building also includes a 1895 Tracker Organ and unique art-glass stained-glass windows. Visitors can take a guided tour of the oldest Gothic Revival building in Indiana, where they will learn about the many people who used the space in the past and see the ongoing preservation work being accomplished by HMI staff and contractors.

The guided tours will start at St. Michael the Archangel, located at 519 E Third St. at the corner of Third Street and St. Michael Avenue. A tour will occur on the second Saturday of each month from May to October at 10 AM (May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, and October 10).

Tours will last approximately an hour. Please note that accessibility is limited at this property. Some stairs will be required, but they can be limited if needed. The building does not have air conditioning and may be warm, depending on the weather. Tickets are $10 for adults. Students and HMI members are free. New this year, tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. For advanced tickets, visit: https://bit.ly/StMikes26. Proceeds from this program will benefit preservation efforts for the site.

Attendees are encouraged to meet their guides at St. Michael’s at 519 E 3rd St., five minutes before each tour. All ages are welcome to attend. Each tour will last approximately 45-60 minutes. Please remember that parking is on city streets in a primarily residential neighborhood. Please allow time to find a parking place and walk to the venue.

The site is also available for tours by appointment. Requests must be made at least 72 hours in advance with Historic Madison, Inc. All requests are subject to availability.

For all questions, please contact Jessica Spiess, Director of Programs, at (812)265-2967
