Sullivan House Restoration is Awarded Two Major Challenge Gifts

The generous gifts will help with restoration of the historic home

MADISON, IN - Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI) announces the award of two challenge gifts to support the restoration of the Jeremiah Sullivan House. Morgan Foods, Inc., of Austin, IN, is challenging donors locally and nationwide to match its $200,000 gift to HMI. Gifts given for a limited time will be
matched dollar-for-dollar by the Morgan Challenge to raise an additional $200,000 for the restoration. Morgan Foods believes strongly in this nationally significant restoration project and wants to spur additional gifts from the community and from across the US, in recognition of HMI’s
efforts.

An additional challenge grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, WI, will increase gifts and pledges for the Sullivan House restoration by 50%, also for a limited time. Tom Jeffris, Foundation President, noted, “We are happy to extend this opportunity. We appreciate the
dedication of smaller cities like Madison to make sure its historic character, and a landmark like the Sullivan House, is passed on to future generations.”

John Staicer, HMI President and Executive Director, stated, “The Sullivan House at 304 West Second Street is one of the earliest and most important Federal-style homes in Indiana because of its sophisticated design, its degree of preservation, and the Sullivan family’s association with the broad currents of local, state, and American history.” He continued, “These generous gifts illustrate how important the Sullivan House is viewed locally and also from a national perspective. We are deeply thankful to John Morgan and Kelly Morgan Maciejak for their strong commitment to
preservation in Madison. We are also honored by the Jeffris Family Foundation, which assists nationally significant preservation projects in small Midwestern towns.”

Contributions can be mailed to Historic Madison, 301 W 2nd St., Madison, IN 47250 or dropped off at the above address. Checks must be made payable to “HMI FBO Sullivan House”. Donations can also be made on the HMI website: www.historicmadisoninc.com. Please look for the
specific link to support the Sullivan House Restoration. Pledge forms for multi-year gifts are available upon request via phone (812) 265-2967 or email hmi@historicmadisoninc.com.

The Sullivan House restoration began in April with the reconstruction of the deteriorated side porches. This phase of the project is planned for completion in the fall. Then work is expected to begin on other exterior repairs, including selective brick and mortar repairs, window and door
restoration, exterior painting, storm window installation, and replacing all existing antiquated electrical, plumbing, and heating systems. A third phase will follow to address interior repairs and restoration, returning the first floor to its early appearance and adding new exhibits on the second
floor. The goal is to restore the Sullivan House to its early 19th-century appearance while providing much-needed modern conveniences and new exhibits focusing on the impact the Sullivan family has had on local, state, and national history.

Historic Madison, Inc. is an award-winning, member-supported, not-for-profit historic preservation organization founded in 1960 to save the Sullivan House from demolition. The organization owns, operates, and maintains nine significant properties in Madison’s National Historic Landmark district, including a number of museums and historic sites like the Shrewsbury-Windle House, the Schroeder Saddletree Factory museum, St. Michael the Archangel, and more.
