USDA Traces Deadly E. coli Outbreak To Beef Sold In Indiana

Sold in June

Federal regulators say it's very important that you check your freezer for recalled ground beef.

The USDA yesterday said one person has died from the E. coli outbreak linked to tainted beef processed by Cargill.

More than 132,000 pounds of possibly tainted ground beef sold nationwide by retailers including Sam's Club, Target, Meijer and Safeway is being recalled in an E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened 17 others.

Potentially tainted beef was also sold at FoodMaxx, Pak N Save and Vons in California, and Aldi stores in eight Midwestern states, including Indiana.

The beef was sold back in June, but because it was sold in bulk, the USDA says some people may still have some of the tainted meat in their freezers.

The recalled products have an "EST. 86R" label inside the USDA inspection mark, and were packaged June 21.
