STEARNS, Ky. (KT) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) London Post has been investigating for nearly seven months a large theft by deception case they say took place at the McCreary County Board of Education.
The KSP says the investigation began on Aug. 6, 2023, after being contacted by the McCreary County Board of Education regarding a theft by deception of more than $125,000.
The Board of Education reported it had received invoices from a fraudulent source which had the exact appearance as that of a supply company with which they had recently made purchases. After paying the invoice, they discovered the source of the invoice was not from the supply company with whom they had been doing business.
During the investigation, the KSP was able to determine the recipient of the ill-gotten funds was a female resident of Florida. The KSP, working with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, were able to take 56-year-old Gail Liuzzo of Micanopy, Fla., into custody.
McCreary County Sheriff David Sampson made arrangements that enabled his office to transport Liuzzo back to McCreary County, where she was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 full cash bond.
She has been indicted by the McCreary County grand jury on a charge of theft by deception of $10,000 or more. Her next court appearance, which is an arraignment on that charge, is scheduled for 9 a.m., March 19 at McCreary Circuit Court.
