Due to problems at Kathryn Winn

Unforeseen structural problems under a section of Kathryn Winn’s roof are prompting changes for the 2018-2019 school year.

Kathryn Winn is currently undergoing a renovation to replace its roof and HVAC system. This project began last school year and is being managed by Wehr Constructors. The project was scheduled for completion before the Aug. 21 start of school.

During the renovation process, Wehr discovered that structural supports for a section of Kathryn Winn’s roof need to be replaced. Until those supports are replaced, students cannot be in that section of the building.

At last nights (July 24th) meeting of the Carroll County Board of Education, the board made the following changes for the 2018-2019 school year:

- The board approved a $516,581.23 change order to the Kathryn Winn Primary renovation project. The school is currently undergoing a renovation to replace its roof and HVAC system. This project began last school year and is being managed by Wehr Constructors. During construction, a contractor fell through a tectum tile that comprises the roof decking for part of the building. This prompted the contractors to get a structural engineer on site. See the structural engineer's report here: http://bit.ly/2LILJo2

- The first day of school will be Sept. 4. See the revised calendar here: http://bit.ly/2OgWZcX

- With two sections of Kathryn Winn Primary unsafe for students, two grade levels will move so that construction can move forward. Second grade will move to Cartmell Elementary. Fifth grade will move to Carroll County Middle School.
