I-65 SB closed for 11 hours

Shortly after 10:00 am yesterday morning, the Indiana State Police responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-65 Southbound near the 54 mile marker in Jackson County that claimed the life of three people in two separate vehicles.

The initial investigation by Trp. Matt Holley, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that I-65 Southbound was slow in the area due to a highway maintenance crew performing repairs to the southbound lanes.

A 2015 Freightliner hauling a box trailer, being driven by Cameron R. Haskett, age 28, Halethrope, Maryland had slowed in the left lane due to the slowed traffic.  A 2009 GMC Sierra being driven by John W. Mumma, age 67, Philo, Illinois had slowed behind Haskett’s vehicle.  A recreational vehicle (motorhome) being driven by Glenn E. Cardelli, age 57, Minocqua, Wisconsin had slowed behind Mumma’s vehicle.

A tractor trailer (unknown year/make), being driven by Roger E. Woody, age 46, Mooresboro, North Carolina was traveling in the left lane, approaching the slowed traffic.  Woody failed to slow his vehicle for the stopped traffic in front of his vehicle.  His vehicle collided with the rear of Cardelli’s vehicle.  This cause a chain reaction, pushing Cardelli’s RV into the back of Mumma’s vehicle.  Mumma’s vehicle was then pushed into the rear of Haskett’s trailer.  Woody’s vehicle also collided with a tractor trailer (unknown year/make) being driven by Anatoliy M. Petrov, age 43, Park Ridge, Illinois that was traveling in the right lane of I-65 Southbound.

As a result of the collision, Glenn Cardelli, his wife Kathryn L. Cardelli, age 57, Minocqua, Wisconsin, and John Mumma were all killed in the crash.  None of the other participants were injured.

Due to the crash, the vehicles caught fire in the middle of the southbound lanes of I-65.  The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed near the 54 mile marker for approximately eleven hours for crash investigation and cleanup.  During the cleanup, traffic was detoured off of I-65 at exit 64 to State Road 11 and US 31.

The Mumma and Cardelli families have been notified.

The crash remains under investigation.  Toxicology results are pending at this time.
