(Jefferson County, Ind.) - Girls Inc. of Jefferson County will host a two-week program that explores science in April. Girls STEAM Ahead is an outreach program that creates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics opportunities for young women through fun activities and experiments. It is open to girls in fifth through eighth grade.

The program started at MJHS in 2014 with assistant program director Connie Leap. It has since taken many forms and been adapted to meet the needs of students and the school. This spring we are trying another change by moving the program to the center. This move allows Girls Inc. to include girls from other schools.

According to the National Science Foundation, women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science, and the physical sciences. (NSF, Science & Engineering Indicators, 2018).

Girls Inc. hopes to do its part to counteract this disparity by encouraging and inspiring girls to remain engaged in STEAM fields.

The program will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., April 12-15 and April 19-22, at Girls Inc., 109 W. Third St. Transportation will be provided from MJHS. Southwestern has a bus route that brings girls to the center. All other girls would need to be dropped off.

Girls must sign-up for the free program by Monday, April 5. Applications are available on the Girls Inc. of Jefferson County facebook page, www.facebook.com/girlsinc.jeffco.in.

For more information, if transportation is needed, or if there are any questions, email girlsinc.jeffco.in@gmail.com or call (812) 265-5863 and ask for program director Sabrina Cline or outreach coordinator Christian Cull.
