(Madison, Ind.) – On Thursday, July 2 the Madison Police investigated a yellow rope tied to a fence at Gains Park.

After a news article about the incident ran in the local paper, information about the rope was then obtained.

A resident in the area reported that a portion of a tree fell into the roadway approximately a week ago, and the rope was likely used to remove the tree.

The homeowner in the area stated that they tied it to the fence, just in case the tree removal company came back to retrieve it.

A representative of the tree removal company was shown a picture of the rope and confirmed it would be something they would use during tree removal. The company stated the rope, commonly referred to as a bull rope, is used to remove trees or secure equipment.

When the incident was first reported many thought that the rope was there to resemble a noose, Mayor Bob Courtney released the following statement about the investigation.

“As I had said a week ago, the city condemns any racial or discriminatory act in our community. The noose was reported to police and I am glad the investigation concluded it was not racially motivated. I have never personally experienced such a politically charged environment than we find ourselves in today. Every day we are inundated with bad news, images of rioting, calls to defund police, hateful rhetoric on social media, and shaming for loving America. We are all better than this. I’m grateful to live in a community like Madison.”
