On August 10, he accepted the role of interim director and has been working closely with Mayor Courtney.

(Madison, Ind.) - Mayor Bob Courtney named Matthew Woolard Director of the City of Madison Parks Department. Matthew will transition into the new position immediately.

Matthew is a 2013 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and a native to Madison. Upon graduating from Indiana State University, he spent time working in staffing and sales in Indianapolis. Matthew recently moved back to Madison, and on June 15, 2020, was named Assistant Parks Director. On August 10, he accepted the role of interim director and has been working closely with Mayor Courtney and the City Parks Board to implement new procedures and policies as well as advance technology in the parks department.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve as Director of Parks and help improve the City of Madison. My career has been built on my ability to solve problems, and I plan to take the same approach when stepping into this new role. It is my goal to look for innovative ways to continue to improve the quality of life for the citizens of this great community and appreciate the mayor’s support,” said Woolard.

During his time serving as interim director, Matthew has worked to improve programming for youth, adults, and seniors. He has dedicated time compiling a financial analysis of the four major assets of the city parks.  He has also worked to bring the parks department to an online platform. The new platform will launch in January and allow for online registration and payments, better league management, more efficiency in the department, and data collection.

“The City of Madison Parks Department plays a significant role in the quality of life here in Madison.  Our community is unique in that it operates over two-dozen parks, a golf course, a dog park, a public swimming pool, a senior center, a campground, and a youth sports complex.  Over the past several months, Matthew has worked diligently with our city leadership team and the parks board in developing strategies to elevate the quality of our parks and the effectiveness of our parks department. Matthew is the right choice to lead this department as we move forward into the new year,” said Mayor Courtney.
