Multiple Law Enforcement Agencies Warning Of Scam Calls/Letters

Do not give any personal information over the phone.

(Madison, Ind.) - On February 22, the Madison Police were notified of a scam involving people claiming to be detectives for an unnamed Law Enforcement Agency.

The Individuals call stating that a family member of the victim is incarcerated and requires an immediate bond and request up to $14,000 to be sent uninsured, via UPS and ask the victims to not tell their bank what it is for, and not to tell UPS what is in the package.

The Madison Police are reminding residents to stay informed and not to become a victim of a scam. If you are to receive a call like this, you should hang up immediately and not give out any personal information.

Another law enforcement agency warning residents of potential scams is the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

According to the department if you are to receive a letter, email, phone call, or text with the following information you are to assume it is a scam:

  • A check that you didn't expect, from a bank that you don't patronize
  • You won a large sum of money, but you need to pay the taxes first
  • You won a vehicle, but you need to pay the taxes first
  • Your friend, family member, or long lost cousin is in jail and needs bail money
  • You owe back property taxes, income taxes, or inheritance tax
  • You have a warrant from the IRS, Federal Marshals, or some other law enforcement agency.

As a reminder, a real government agency, jail, sweepstakes, or prize center will ever ask you to pay with Apple, Walmart, or any other retail gift cards.

It is always important to check with banks or government agencies that you can verify the information directly with that agency with an address or phone number that you can locate yourself.
