Ripley Co. Sheriff's Office Receiving Calls on "Police Officer" Phone Scam

Residents are reminded to never give out personal information over the phone.

(Ripley County, Ind.) – Ripley County residents are being warned of an ongoing phone scam.

The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls regarding “police officers” calling businesses asking for personal information of employees.

Investigators say the callers are using names of real police officers from out of state agencies and using an app to spoof their phone numbers.

Caller ID spoofing is the process of changing the caller ID to any number than the actual calling number. This makes the call appear legitimate, however, the person on the other end of the line is a scammer.

The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents they will never ask someone to pay a bond or any other fees over the phone.
