(Madison, Ind.) - Shawe Memorial announces Johanna Leatherman as the school’s 2021 nominee for the Indiana Academic All-Star program. Each Indiana high school may nominate one senior for this prestigious award.

A maximum of 90 students are selected as regional winners by a selection committee and 40 of those students are chosen and announced in March as Indiana Academic All-Stars and invited to attend a ceremony in Indianapolis. The Indiana Association of School Principals sponsors these awards which recognize students who have an excellent academic record including challenging course load, exceptional grade point average, above-average SAT/ACT scores, and commendable school and community involvement.

Johanna is a member of the National Honor Society Fr. Michael Shawe Chapter, Indiana Academic Super Bowl English Team, French Club, and Varsity Softball Team. Johanna was named as one of IASP’s Rising Stars last year and was Shawe’s delegate to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders. She is very involved in service to her school and community and has volunteered for Prince of Peace Schools events, Madison Gymnastics, Madison

Regatta and as a tutor. Nominees submitted an essay on their most influential educator. Johanna chose Mrs. Lou Ann Center, stating “Mrs. Center has taught me so much over the years, both academically through her classes and mentally by giving me the support and confidence that I could succeed in whatever I set my mind to. Her classes made me want to commit to the idea of being an engineer when I grew up. She encouraged my passion for engineering and sciences by offering me more advanced classes that would peak my interest in other fields like her Digital Electronics and Computer Science classes. I don’t think I would be as successful a student as I am today without Mrs. Center.”

Although undecided on where she will attend, Johanna has been accepted so far to Purdue University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Maryland. Johanna plans to major in Aerospace Engineering. Congratulations to Johanna on her nomination!
