Indiana's commitment to investing in infrastructure – for communities large and small – makes our state an ideal place to work, start a business and raise a family. Because of fiscal responsibility and planning, Indiana is able to not only maintain our roads, but also strategically invest in long-term projects without passing on debt to future generations. Thanks to our fully funded state infrastructure plan, our communities will continue to see activity promoting growth and business in our area.

To live up to our motto as the Crossroads of America, Indiana is making strategic investments to maintain our 80,000 miles of roadways. Cities and towns in Decatur, Dearborn, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley and Switzerland counties received more than $5.1 million in state matching grants for local road and bridge improvements through the Community Crossings Grant Program. These additional dollars help even the most rural areas of the state move ahead with road projects that make our roads safer, and can lead to more visitors and economic development.

The state is also continuing the planning process for an extension of State Road 101, which will connect with U.S. 50 near Milan and at the Ohio River crossing at Markland Dam near Vevay. This new 25-mile development will provide a direct connection to I-71 and I-74 for Hoosiers in Dearborn, Ohio and Switzerland counties, and a cross-river route for freight traffic in the area. This investment to connect our communities through a strong network of roads not only means more construction jobs, but also business expansion and socioeconomic development in our area. It will also help our communities capitalize on our proximity to the Ohio River to drive economic development for years to come.

Sound infrastructure is crucial for a strong, vibrant economy, and future growth and opportunities. Whether it's improving roads and bridges, expanding broadband access or promoting development, Indiana is taking big strides to make our state the best place to call home. The next call for Community Crossings Matching Grants projects is expected in July and more information can be found at in.gov/indot. I encourage our communities that could benefit from these additional funds to continue applying for these grants.
