(Washington, D.C.) - While many schools are good, it takes a great school to educate all students from different social and economic backgrounds, leading and challenging them to a successful path to graduation.

U.S. News partnered with RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm, to rank high schools across the nation. Schools were then broken down to top high schools in each state.

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare students for college. Ranks are based on the following:

  • College readiness - 30%
    • This includes the seniors that took and passed at least on AP or IB exam.
  • Math and reading proficiency - 20%
    • Proficiency will rely on the scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass before graduating.
  • Math and reading performance - 20%
    • How aggregated scores on Indiana assessments compare to the U.S. News' expectations given the proportions of students who are black, Hispanic, and from low-income homes.
  • Underserved student performance - 10%
    • Scores on state assessments aggregated among students that are black, Hispanic, and from low-income homes. Scores will be compared to what is typical in the state for non-underserved students, with parity higher being the goal.
  • College curriculum breadth -10%
    • Proportions 12th graders who took and passed AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams.
  • Graduation rate - 10%
    • The proportion of entering 9th graders who graduated four years later.

With this methodology, the vast majority of high schools in the United States were able to be ranked.

Based on these indicators, multiple local schools were ranked in the top 387 high schools. Schools around the area were ranked within the top 200.

With a score of 53.45 out of 100, Madison Consolidated received a rank of 210. This study found that the AP participation rate at Madison Consolidated is 41%. The high school also received a score of 22.6 for college preparedness.

Southwestern High School received a rank of 304. Southwestern has a score of 28.98 out of 100, with AP participation rate at 24%.

Jennings County, Scottsburg, and Austin School District 1 were all a part of the list. Jennings County received a rank of 169, Scottsburg received a rank of 286, and Austin received a rank of 318-387.

Other schools that were on the list include:

  • Milan High School #47
  • Switzerland County High School #302
  • East Central High School #101
  • South Dearborn High School and Rising Sun High School ranked between #318-387

Scottsburg High School was ranked in the top schools in Louisville, Ky. Metro Area.
