WINTER FIELD DAY

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Each year the American Radio Relay League holds an event they call Field Day. It is the most popular on-the-air Ham Radio event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. The idea is to show that Ham Radio is capable and available to operate in situations during the time of emergency. The weather in the month of June is usually more pleasant than you may find in this area during January.
That being said, I want to inform you about another event that also tests the Ham Radio operator and his/her equipment in time of emergency. The event is called WINTER FIELD DAY and is held annually during the month of January. The developers of Winter Field Day passionately believe that Ham radio operators should practice portable emergency communications in winter environments as the potential for freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and other hazards present unique operational concerns. WFD is formatted to help increase your level of preparedness for disasters and improve your operational skills in subpar conditions.
The three radio clubs in the area, Clifty Amateur Radio Society, Ivy Tech Community College Amateur Radio Club, and the Royal Rangers Amateur Radio Club, will be participating in the 2023 Winter Field Day event on Saturday the 28th of this month. The operating positions will be located at the North end of Clifty Falls State Park near the Clifty Shelter. Starting time is scheduled for 1:00 pm local time. The public is invited to attend as there is no park fee this time of the year. Dress for the weather conditions. Bring your chairs, a thermos of Hot Chocolate or Coffee, and be prepared to witness local ham radio operators in action.
Anyone having questions about the event or are interested in becoming a licensed operator may contact the event coordinator Jerry Barnes by email at ka9pij@arrl.net. Come see what capabilities are possible with amateur radio. The slogan for the radio clubs developed for2023 is “LET’S MAKE HAM RADIO GREAT (and fun) AGAIN IN THIS AREA.”
