Burn season at Big Oaks

Through April 15th

Prescribed burn season is officially underway in the woodlands of southern Indiana. Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Madison began their burn seasons today.

The spring prescribed fire season typically is between February and April 15th, according to a release from Big Oaks NWR. Throughout the season, smoke may be visible above the refuges.

Local officials have been made aware of the prescribed burns and management plans.

Prescribed burning is conducted inside the refuges to improve wildlife habitat and reduce the hazardous of fuels that lead to severe wildfires.

Officials say the timing of each burn depends on weather and other conditions. Prescribed fire will only be conducted when conditions allow for safe implementation.Officials say the timing of each burn depends on weather and other conditions.
