INDIANAPOLIS - Jennifer McCormick has announced her candidacy for Indiana governor.

The state’s 44th Superintendent of Public Instruction launched her campaign last week. McCormick is the first Democratic candidate to declare for the 2024 gubernatorial race.

McCormick is a New Castle native that began her career as a special education teacher. She held several other positions in education prior to being elected Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2016.

McCormick ran as a Republican for state superintendent.

In 2024, she will attempt to become the first Democrat to hold the governor’s office since Joe Kernan did from 2003-2005, when he succeeded Frank O’Bannon.

Other candidates to this point include Republicans Mike Braun, Suzanne Crouch, and Eric Doden, and Libertarian Donald Rainwater.

The 2024 Indiana gubernatorial election will be held on November 5, 2024.

Current Governor Eric Holcomb is term-limited and cannot seek re-election for a third consecutive term in office.
