Indiana DWD Releases April Unemployment Numbers

Indiana's unemployment rate is 2.2 percent higher than the national rate.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – April unemployment rates are in and Indiana’s rates are higher than the national rate.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state’s jobless rate stands at 16.9 percent for the month, higher than the national rate of 14.7 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the number of unemployed people who are actively seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.

Indiana’s labor force had a net decrease of 40,450 last month. This was a result of an increase of 446,017 unemployed residents and an increase of 486,467 employed residents.

In total, the state’s labor force stands at 3.23 million and Indiana’s 61.4 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 60.2 percent.
