(Madison, Ind.) - One local student has been named the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County’s 2020 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. This year’s award has been accepted by Luka Chabukashvili. Luka will receive full tuition to the Indiana college or university of his choice and a $900 stipend for required books and equipment.

Luka is the son of David and Natia Chabukashvili of Madison and will be attending Indiana University-Bloomington with a major in Biology. He attends Madison Consolidated High School, where he actively participates in the National Honor Society, Varsity Soccer, Theatre, and has received multiple gold and gold with distinction awards for saxophone at regional and state competitions.

Luka also participates in the Mayor’s Youth Council, Medical Explorers at KDH, and serves on the United Way Board.

“I am so blessed to receive this award from the Community Foundation and Lilly Endowment, Inc.,” said Chabukashvili. “It is a truly life changing award and I am blessed to amongst such a talented group of students. I’m so thankful for my teachers, friends, and family that have supported me on my academic journey. It means the world and I can’t express my gratitude enough.”

Twenty-three Jefferson County students applied for the scholarship this year, and six finalists were chosen. Including Chabukashvili, the six finalists (and their schools) were: Issac Boone (Madison), Jessie Dyer (Madison), Madelynn Jacobs (Southwestern), Nathaniel Pawlak (Shawe Memorial), and Harper Watson (Madison). Boone, Dyer, Jacobs, Pawlak, and Watson will each receive a $1,000 Community Foundation Scholar Award for being named a finalist.

Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) administers the Lilly Endowment Community statewide and selects the final recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 30 regionally accredited degree-granting, nonprofit, private colleges, and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Including the 23rd cohort, 4,769 full-tuition scholarships have been awarded, and over $405 million in scholarship tuition has been provided since the program’s inception in 1998.
