New Milan Water Tower to Pay Homage to Basketball History

The design calls for the tank to look like the sign pictured.

The top of the new water tower is expected to resemble this sign which is seen when you enter the Town of Milan.

(Milan, Ind.) - A new water tower will soon go up in Milan.

Demolition of the existing 300,000-gallon tank at N. Warpath Drive took place this morning.  The aging tank will be replaced with a new tank which will look like a basketball.

The Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (SIRPC) says the design will help further brand the Town of Milan by strengthening its identity as a “basketball town”.

Other improvements include replacing water mains, hydrants, valves, and water service lines.

SIRPC executive director Mary McCarty tells Eagle Country 99.3 that the town water lines are over 50 years old, and that the existing water tower did not have enough capacity to meet the needs of the town.

Other needs for a new distribution system stem from issues with failed or cracked lines that have led to boil advisories, and for fire protection.

The cost of the project is above $5 million.

Last February, OCRA awarded the Town of Milan $700,000 to help fund the project.

The project timeline calls for completion by the end of August, but extensions are likely according to SIRPC.

“Hopefully the project will be done by the end of the year,” said McCarty.
