The award-winning Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum will reopen to the public May 2 for the first time since being damaged by the June 2021 Crooked Creek flash flood.  Located at 106 Milton Street in the Madison National Historic Landmark District, it is the last of America’s saddle frame manufacturing sites dating to the 19th century.

The Schroeder museum includes two restored factory buildings where the Schroeder family crafted thousands of internal skeletons for riding saddles between 1878 and 1972 from locally sourced lumber.  Housed within are a wide range of unique tools and machines used by saddletree makers, the only such collection in the US.  The Schroeder family home is also included on the tour and features new exhibits showcasing the history of the Schroeder business and family.  The museum is a property of Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI).

Also opening May 2 are Historic Madison’s four other museum properties.  The museums include the award-winning Shrewsbury-Windle House National Historic Landmark, the Dr. Hutchings Office and Museum, the Jeremiah Sullivan House and the Francis Costigan House.

The properties will be open four days a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) starting May 2.  Hours and admission fees vary by property – please visit our website, www.historicmadisoninc.com, connect with us on social media or call (812) 265-2967 for details.

Group tour packages for ten or more visitors and private tours for smaller groups of the museums named above, subject to availability, may be requested via phone (812) 265-2967 or via email at hmi@historicmadisoninc.com well in advance of the planned tour date.

Historic Madison, Inc., a not for profit historic preservation organization founded in 1960, plays a key role in the ongoing preservation, restoration, education and development of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District.  The organization owns and operates 11 historic properties, five of which are museums.  Volunteers are needed to help lead tours.
