(Vevay, Ind.) - Some trees that have been part of the downtown Vevay landscape for many years have been removed.
The Town of Vevay released a statement on Wednesday regarding the removal of trees along Main Street.
"We understand that many residents are saddened by the removal of the trees along Main Street, and we share those feelings. These trees have been part of our downtown landscape for many years and hold memories for countless members of our community. However, after careful evaluation, it became clear that removal was necessary."
The trees were causing significant damage to the Swiss Inn's foundation, creating safety concerns for pedestrians, and impacting the 10-inch water main that serves our town.
INDOT required removal for the upcoming Main Street rehabilitation project included to allow for critical infrastructure improvements.
The INDOT project will bring a renewed Main Street with upgraded roadways, improved storm drainage, and new sidewalks designed to better serve residents and visitors for generations to come.
"We understand that downtown may feel bare right now, and change is never easy. We ask for your patience and understanding as we work toward the larger vision for our community. While it is difficult to say goodbye to something familiar, these improvements are investments in the safety, functionality, and future of Vevay."
