James Tyson Birthplace

A fire broke out on the Versailles courthouse square Wednesday morning.

A citizen called 911 around 6:00 a.m. after seeing smoke coming from a historic building on the square’s east side, The Versailles Republican newspaper reports. Firefighters came and put out the fire, but extensive damage had been done to the building.

Nobody was hurt. At least one person lived in an apartment in the building.

A cause is under investigation by the Versailles Fire Department.

The building erected in 1824 was the birthplace of late Versailles benefactor and Walgreen’s drug store chain co-founder James Tyson.
